Sustainability is one of seven focus topics defined as part of our Strategy 2025. The sustainability strategy developed by KKL Luzern is a comprehensive approach that incorporates the areas of environment, society and economy. This approach aims to work from the inside out.
Deep lakes, like Lake Lucerne, store thermal energy. The centralised use of lake water for heating and cooling is an important step towards a sustainable energy future. Thanks to thermal energy from Lake Lucerne, we can reduce the use of fossil fuels and thus minimise CO2 and pollutant emissions. The energy is produced and consumed locally, therefore long transport routes are rendered unnecessary.
Additionally, we built in windows with special insulation to minimise heat loss in winter and raising room temperatures in summer.
Since January 2024, the KKL Luzern is using 100% renewable electricity, known as "Natural Electricity". This natural electricity is generated at certified Swiss hydropower plants as well as wind energy, solar energy and biomass.
By changing the lighting in over 600 rooms and on our stages from halogen to LED, we are able to save around 500,000 kWh of electricity per year.
Certified with Level II - engaged, we are part of the Swisstainable sustainability programme. The programme brings together businesses and organisations from the entire Swiss tourism sector. By participating, we commit to continuous sustainable corporate development, pursue measures in the area of sustainability and thus make a real contribution to Swiss tourism.
The UN Global Compact Network Switzerland & Liechtenstein is a business association and the official regional platform of the United Nations Global Compact based in New York. The aim is to promote responsible business practices by encouraging a multi-stakeholder dialogue and providing companies with knowledge, tools and mutual learning to promote corporate responsibility and sustainability.
