In recent months, the planning work has been in full swing. On Monday, 12 May 2025, the first photovoltaic system with an area of 1,100 square meters was installed on the roof of the KKL Luzern. This area can cover 10 % of the company's own requirements. The KKL Luzern is thus making an active contribution to further strengthening energy sustainability. The investment totaled around 350,000 Swiss francs.
In January 2025, the city of Lucerne granted planning permission for the first permanent photovoltaic system on the roof above the Kunstmuseum. The construction of a 100 square meter photovoltaic trial installation on the copper roof was also approved. The costs for the project and installation amount to around CHF 350,000, financed by the KKL Luzern Foundation.
In a planning phase lasting several years, a project team analyzed different variants and carried out tests, which provided important information for the implementation. Due to the high wind loads and the special properties of the copper roof, conventional modules and mounting systems are not suitable. On Monday, a helicopter transported 495 black modules to the designated charging points on the roof. These are installed by BE Netz AG specialists at over 2,500 anchor points on the Sunbreaker grid using the latest technologies. Under high pressure, chrome steel nails are shot through the substructure into the solid aluminum material of the grating. The materials weld together in the process. This process is characterized by high productivity, high mechanical strength and tension- and dust-free processing.
It will take around 6 to 8 weeks (by the end of June at the latest) before the system is effectively feeding electricity into the grid. According to the calculations, around 200,000 kilowatt hours of electricity can be produced per year. The electricity is used to cover KKL Luzern's own consumption. This first area can cover around 10 % of our own requirements for the year.
As part of the strategic focus on sustainability, the installation of the photovoltaic system makes an active contribution to achieving the sustainability targets: reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by at least 20 % and reducing external electricity procurement by 10 %.
In order to be completely self-sufficient one day, the facility would have to be extended at a later date, possibly on the south-facing rear facade. This is particularly advantageous for generating electricity in winter. Over the next few years, the KKL Luzern intends to optimize the building's unique architecture while preserving its use of renewable energies for an exceptional guest experience," says Roger Gort, President of the Concert Hall Foundation and member of the Board of Trustees of the KKL Luzern foundation. The KKL Luzern is in dialogue with various parties regarding the implementation of a PV system on the rear facade.
